Cochon Butcher is truly in a league of its own. Not only is this hybrid butcher shop/restaurant a must-visit for any tourist on the prowl for New Orleans’ most iconic eats, it’s also a lively local standby for house-made charcuterie and crave-worthy sandwiches. The chef-owner duo of Donald Link and Stephen Stryjewski are behind some of the city’s most renowned restaurants including Peche, Herbsaint, and the next-door Cochon, and they’ve won multiple James Beard Awards. This Hot Muffuletta is their take on the city’s most iconic handheld: A soft Sicilian roll piled high with house-cured capicola, mortadella, and salami along with provolone and spicy giardiniera. It stands apart from the pack because it’s served warm, an inspired twist that really puts it over the top!

- Meats, cheese, and giardiniera may be kept refrigerated for up to 5 days. Freezing is not recommended.
- Muffuletta bread can be stored at room temperature for up to 2 days or frozen for up to 1 week. If freezing, leave at room temperature for 2-3 hours before assembling.
- Muffulettas may be enjoyed cold, but they are best served warm.
- Your Haydel’s king cake & frosting can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 7 days.
- The green, purple, and yellow sugars are the traditional colors of Mardi Gras! You can keep these, and the icing, at room temperature until ready to assemble your cake.
- Olive Salad and Hurricane Drink Mix can be stored at room temperature until opened.
- Once opened, Olive Salad can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 12 months and Hurricane Drink Mix can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
- Pralines may be stored at room temperature for up to 1 month.
To Serve
Muffuletta
- Preheat your oven to 350°F. Allow all ingredients to come to room temperature.
- Place bread cut-side up on a baking sheet (use more than one if needed).
- Spread 2 tablespoons of giardiniera on the cut-sides of the bread.
- Layer capicola, mortadella, then the salami on each of the bottom bread pieces, dividing evenly.
- Top with provolone, dividing evenly among sandwiches.
- Transfer open sandwiches to the oven and bake until the cheese is melted, 5-8 minutes.
- Gently close the sandwich. Serve cut in half, and enjoy!
King Cake
This king cake isn’t just a dessert – enjoy it any time of day as breakfast, a snack, or coffee cake!
- Remove the king cake and frosting from the refrigerator and leave them at room temperature for 3 hours prior to serving.
- Give the icing a stir and spread it evenly across top of the cake.
- Sprinkle the colored sugars in stripes across top of the cake. Be sure to do this quickly, before the icing sets.
- That’s it! Now slice the cake and see who finds the baby!
Beignet Mix
- Mix in bowl 2 cups mix and 7 fl. oz. water. Stir with spoon until blended.
- Roll to 1/8" thickness on floured surface, using flour liberally on dough.
- Cut into 2 1/4" squares. Makes about 2 dozen.
- Fry 1-2" of oil at 370° F basting continually on each side until puffy and light golden. Drain well. (Oil should be hot enough for dough to pop to surface in 8-10 seconds.)
- Sprinkle generously with powdered sugar and enjoy!
Olive Salad
- Olive Salad is ready to enjoy right out of the jar! Or add cream cheese & sour cream to serve with your favorite chips.
Hurricane Drink Mix
- Get a glass that holds 28 oz.
- Add 4 oz. of Hurricane Rum or a good Amber/Gold Rum.
- Add 4 oz. of Hurricane Mix.
- Fill with crushed ice.
- Garnish with an orange and cherry.
- Enjoy!
