It all began when Crank & Boom founders Toa and Mike Green were looking for a creative dessert to serve in their family’s Thai restaurant. They purchased an ice cream machine and churned the first batch of what would eventually become Kentucky’s best small-batch ice cream. Named "Best Ice Cream in Kentucky’’ by Travel & Leisure, Crank & Boom has been making ice cream flavors with locally-sourced ingredients at their Lexington, Kentucky, “ice cream lounge” since 2015. The couple makes flavors like Bourbon Honey, Blackberry Buttermilk, Coffee Stout, and Blueberry Lime Cheesecake—decadent flavors that incorporate the bounty of Kentucky’s farms, breweries, and distilleries.

- 1 Bourbon & Honey – Best Seller! A creamy treat made with Kentucky bourbon and honey from Hosey Honey in Midway, Kentucky.
- 1 Bourbon Ball – Bourbon & Honey ice cream with in-house made crunchy candied pecans and dark chocolate bombe sauce.
- 1 Chocolate Bourbon Pie – We cannot have Derby Weekend without the “pie that can’t be named!” Crank and Boom made their own version and turned it into an ice cream flavor. This special flavor is made with Dark Chocolate Truffle ice cream infused with Kentucky Bourbon and chunks of in-house made chocolate bourbon pie with layers of flaky buttery crust, candied pecans, and mini chocolate chips. This flavor always comes in first!
- 1 Bluegrass Sundown – Fresh milk, heavy cream, cane sugar, and pure vanilla mixed with Bluegrass Sundown liqueur. It’s a delightful blend of bourbon & coffee with dark and white chocolate layered throughout.
- 1 Kentucky Blackberry & Buttermilk – Made with local buttermilk and blackberry jam from Windstone Farm in Kentucky.
- 1 Fresh Strawberry – Hand-picked strawberries from VanMeter Family Farm in Leitchfield, Kentucky make this flavor refreshing and delicious!
- Ice cream is shipped frozen with dry ice.
- Do not remove dry ice with bare hands.
- Upon arrival immediately freeze ice cream.
- Allow to temper in the freezer for at least 2 hours before eating.

In 2011, Crank & Boom founders Toa and Mike Green were looking for a creative dessert to serve in their family’s Thai restaurant, when they purchased a 2-quart ice cream machine and churned up the first batch of what would eventually become Kentucky’s most sought after small batch ice cream. It was when their restaurant customers started showing up just for dessert however, that the couple decided to close the restaurant and go all in on ice cream.
Today, Crank & Boom’s flagship location serves up ice cream alongside craft beer and cocktails made with local spirits in a concept the Greens call an “ice cream lounge.” From Bourbon Honey and Blackberry Buttermilk to Coffee Stout and Bourbon Ball, their flavors incorporate the bounty of Kentucky’s farms, breweries, and distilleries, as well as international ingredients like taro and black sesame in an homage to Toa’s Thai heritage.
