When Barney Greengrass first opened his Jewish smoked fish (or “appetizing”) store in New York City in 1908, he had one goal: to operate a “food store for those who demand the best.” Soon, all of New York knew him as “The Sturgeon King” – a nickname that’s stuck ever since. Since 1982 it’s been owned by Barney’s Grandson, Gary Greengrass, and the iconic shop still looks much like it did in Barney’s day. The family is still dedicated to serving the finest smoked fish, bagels, and other classic Jewish deli fare & appetizing to New Yorkers and visitors from all over the world, and in 2006 Barney Greengrass was named an American Classic by the James Beard Foundation.

His customers followed, his popularity grew, and soon all of New York knew him as “The Sturgeon King."
Two generations later, Barney Greengrass continues to cater to "those who demand the best," under the meticulous guidance of Barney's grandson, Gary. In addition to looking much the same as it did back in Barney's day, the iconic shop and restaurant has become a one-of-a-kind destination for smoked fish and deli lovers from across the globe. The Greengrass family's commitment to serving the finest classic New York fare has earned Barney Greengrass countless accolades, including an American Classic Award from the James Beard Foundation in 2006.
