Sky’s Gourmet Tacos is a Los Angeles institution, and its founder, Barbara Jean “Sky” Burrell, is an undeniable legend. She was the first African American hired by the Kroger’s supermarket chain, oversaw a staff of 200 at United Way, was on the board of The Watts Labor Action Committee, and was part of the team that introduced the first drive-thru for McDonald’s. But after all that, Sky decided to embrace her passion for food, and turned her attention to infusing the humble taco with a dose of Southern soul. Sky Taco was the result, and when it opened in 1992 it proved to be an overnight smash hit. Burrell has since opened a catering business and a gourmet market place, and has been showered with countless awards and accolades including a plaque from LA Mayor Eric Garcetti. But these are the tacos that started it all!
This package serves 4-6 people and includes everything you need to make 12 Tacos
- Seasoned Chicken (1.5 lbs.)
- 24 Large Shrimp (1.25 lbs.)
- 12 Seasoned Tortillas (each 6")
- Cheddar Cheese, Shredded (4 oz.)
- Tomatoes, Diced (8 oz.)
- Cilantro (1 oz.)
- Lettuce, Shredded (10 oz.)
- 1 pairs Gloves
- 4 Taco Holders
- Choose to add Sky’s Original All-Purpose Seasoning (5 oz.) – Unique “Mexican, with a Splash of Soul” flavor in an all-purpose seasoning mix. Add the famous Sky’s flavor to all your recipes. A great addition to stews, stirred into simmering pork, or even mixed into salad dressings or dips!
- Taco kit ships frozen with ice packs, may thaw during transit.
- Upon arrival, store taco kit in the refrigerator.
- Taco kit lasts up to 3 days in the refrigerator, do not freeze.
To Serve
Stovetop
- Heat pan over stovetop until hot.
- Remove tortillas from their bag, remove the paper, and place tortillas on hot pan.
- Flip tortillas once or twice (or until heated through) and place on a warm plate.
- Reduce heat to medium and add a little butter (not provided) to the pan.
- Add protein and heat until warm, approx. 5 minutes.
- Fill tortillas with protein and toppings, top with sauce, and enjoy!
Microwave
- Make a small puncture in the bag of tortillas and microwave for 6-10 seconds until warm and flexible.
- Remove tortillas from the microwave and place on a warm plate.
- Make a small puncture in the bag of protein and microwave until warm, approx. 10-12 seconds.
- Fill tortillas with protein and toppings, top with sauce, and enjoy!
Sous Vide
- Heat tortillas in microwave or on stovetop.
- Place a pot of water on the stove and bring it to a boil.
- Turn heat to low, place the sealed bag of protein in the pot, top with lid, and heat until warm.
- Shrimp: 5-10 minutes
- Chicken: 10 minutes
- Fill tortillas with protein and toppings, top with sauce, and enjoy!
