Except for HawaiiFor four generations, the Russ family has sold some of the finest appetizing on earth. “Appetizing” essentially translates to “foods that go with bagels,” so you know that we do our bagels right! When it comes to New York bagels, Russ & Daughters represents the real thing. We make our bagels in the traditional New York style: they’re boiled and then baked in an old-fashioned revolving oven. Layer some cream cheese and smoked salmon on top for “The Best Bagel and Lox in New York,” according to New York Magazine.
Since 2019, Russ & Daughters has been crafting all of our own bagels, bialys, shissel rye bread, pumpernickel, challah, babka, black and white cookies, knishes, and other traditional baked goods in our state-of-the-art factory at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Each of our recipes reflects four generations of Russ & Daughters’ dedication to excellence, authenticity, history, and tradition.
Please note that due to carrier issues, Russ & Daughters is unable to ship to Hawaii.

- Store bagels in their plastic bag at room temperature for up to two days.
- If you’d like to keep them longer, put them in the freezer.
To Serve
- Preheat oven to 350°F and put bagels on a sheet pan.
- For room-temperature bagels, bake for 6 minutes. For frozen bagels, bake for 10 minutes.
- Slice, schmear, and enjoy!

This landmark shop started with an Eastern European immigrant selling food to support his family and save up for a pushcart… which turned into a horse & wagon… which eventually turned into a widely acclaimed appetizing shop recognized for its contributions to the historical landscape of New York's Lower East Side.
When Joel Russ opened his shop in 1914, countless New York shops specialized in “appetizing,” best defined as foods that go with bagels. Russ passed the shop on to his daughters in the 1930s, and today it’s run by fourth-generation owners Josh Russ Tupper and Niki Russ Federman. Russ & Daughters is one of the last of its kind, providing tastes and traditions from the Old World out of the same old tenement building on Houston Street.
In the United States, less than one percent of family businesses survive long enough to enter the fourth generation, but Russ & Daughters has bucked the trend. It's a true taste of old New York.
