Mary Macleod’s Shortbread

Out of Toronto, Mary Macleod's Shortbread has been baking the city's favorite all-butter shortbread since 1981. That year, Scottish-born Mary Macleod opened Canada's first shop devoted entirely to shortbread, built on her family's recipe and four ingredients: butter, flour, rice flour and sugar.

Still family-owned and women-led, the bakery makes every cookie by hand in small batches in Toronto. Its Chocolate Crunch was voted Toronto's favorite holiday cookie by Toronto Star readers in 2025. More than four decades after Mary opened her doors, the Toronto original is shipped nationwide on Goldbelly for the first time, and only on Goldbelly.
