Derby Pie

When Grandma Leaudra and Grandpa Walter Kern created Derby-Pie® in their Kentucky kitchen in 1954, they crafted a legend. Premium chocolate meets hand-sorted California walnuts in a filling that’s rich without being overwhelming. Baked in Kern’s Kitchen’s signature buttery, flaky crust, hand-pressed using the same technique Grandma Leaudra perfected, every Derby-Pie® delivers a complex, satisfying homemade flavor.

More than half a century after the first Derby Pie was pulled out of the oven, Kern’s Kitchen sells more than 100,000 Derby Pies a year. Leaudra and Walter Kern, along with their son, George, created the Derby Pie in 1954 (the name was pulled out of a hat!). This gooey pie features rich chocolate and walnut chunks and a perfectly flaky crust. Most importantly, the Louisville, Kentucky, bakery is the only one in the country baking them. Each pie is still baked one at a time.

Ahh the Derby Pie… one of Kentucky’s few food treasures that isn’t all about the bourbon. And it sure isn’t missed. Each pie is still baked one at a time. Stuffing your face with pie doesn’t get more authentic than this.
