If you’ve ever eaten a corn dog, you can thank Fletcher’s Original Corny Dogs. The classic treat of a hot dog dunked in cornmeal batter and deep fried until golden brown was invented in Dallas back in 1942 by brothers Neil & Carl Fletcher, who were inspired by a local baker who specialized in hot dogs baked in cornmeal in the shape of an ear of corn. When they tried out the recipe, they realized that by spearing the hot dogs on a stick and deep-frying them, the end result was something truly special. They debuted their creation to heaps of praise at that year’s State Fair of Texas, and the rest is history! Fletcher’s is still serving up their iconic Corny Dogs at the State Fair of Texas every year, and the company is still owned by the Fletcher family.
