Crisp and sturdy, they hold up to a schmear of cream cheese or a scoop of hummus and stand on their own straight from the bag. They’re made from the same hand-rolled, brick-oven bagels the Rosner family has baked in Hicksville, Long Island since 1975, and they’re kosher. What started as a Long Island neighborhood bagel shop has since become one of the New York area’s most beloved mini-chains for fresh-baked, old-fashioned New York bagels. Back in 1975, fourth-generation bagel & bialy baker Mel Rosner opened up the first location of Bagel Boss in Hicksville, New York. It was a family operation, with Mel’s sons Randy, Jerry, and Adam all lending a hand. Adam went on to open a location of his own in 1989, along with 10 more over the next two decades thanks to the success of his signature bagel creations – including the now-iconic flat bagel dubbed the Flagel.
Today, Bagel Boss has more than 20 locations in the NYC area and as far afield as Boca Raton, Florida, and Burbank, California. Adam and his children continue to run the company, and every bagel is hand-rolled, boiled, and baked in brick ovens, made according to the same exacting standards, traditional techniques, and old-world recipes passed down by Mel and previous generations.
