Back in the early 1990s, Danish bakers Ole Kristoffersen and Steen Skallebaek each opened their own bakeries, achieving renown in their home country of Denmark. In 2008, the duo joined forces and opened a bakery called Lagkagehuset, which translates to โLayer Cake House.โ It quickly gained a loyal following by pioneering a resurgence of artisanal, handcrafted baking practices and expanded to multiple locations. Outside of its native Denmark it was renamed Ole & Steen.
Today, the bakery has locations in Denmark, England, and New York City, and has become legendary for its authentic Danish breads and pastries as well as its sleek, inviting spaces with that distinctively Danish sense of โhyggeโ and hospitality.
