Palmieri’s Bakery in Johnston, Rhode Island is the legendary home of the Rhode Island Pizza Strip, a thick-crust focaccia-style “party pizza” topped with a bright red, herb-infused tomato sauce and traditionally served at room temperature. The bakery traces its roots to 1905, when Italian immigrant Domenico Palmieri opened the shop and introduced a style of cheeseless tomato pizza that would become a staple across the Ocean State.
Now run by the fifth generation of the Palmieri family, the bakery continues to craft its iconic pizza strips using the same time-honored techniques and closely guarded sauce recipe.
