When Barney Greengrass first opened his smoked fish (appetizing) store in Harlem in 1908, his mission was simple: to create a “food store for those who demand the best.” In 1929, Barney moved his much beloved shop to its present home on the Upper West Side. His customers followed, his popularity grew, and soon all of New York knew him as “The Sturgeon King."
Two generations later, Barney Greengrass continues to cater to "those who demand the best," under the meticulous guidance of Barney's grandson, Gary. In addition to looking much the same as it did back in Barney's day, the iconic shop and restaurant has become a one-of-a-kind destination for smoked fish and deli lovers from across the globe. The Greengrass family's commitment to serving the finest classic New York fare has earned Barney Greengrass countless accolades, including an American Classic Award from the James Beard Foundation in 2006. Not only that, if you look closely in some of your favorite movies and tv shows like "You've Got Mail", "Billions", and "30 Rock", you may even catch a glimpse of the restaurant's world-famous wallpaper. Barney Greengrass is a true New York original, and it’s shipping nationwide!
