Donkey's Place

Anthony Bourdain's Favorite Cheesesteak

Anthony Bourdain called Philly the “center of the cheesesteak universe,” but to him, the best cheesesteak in the area came from Donkey’s Place, in Camden, New Jersey. Opened in 1943 by Olympic heavyweight boxing champion, Leon Lucas, Donkey’s Place specializes in the New Jersey Cheesesteak. Unlike its Philly cousin, this cheesesteak is served on a round poppyseed kaiser roll, with American cheese, sizzling steak, and browned onions. Be prepared to unleash your inner glutton, you might not be able to stop at just one of these sandwiches. Maybe it’s sacrilegious to say that the best cheesesteaks aren’t from Philly, but when was anything this good not a bit sinful?

We're not the only ones who love them!

Donkey's Place has been featured on Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown and ABC's The Goldbergs. They have also been featured on The Food Networks list of "The Best Cheesesteaks in Philadelphia" and the NY Post's "Best Sandwiches in America."
