Chocolate New York Cheesecake (11")

Simply prepared with only cream cheese, butter, eggs, heavy cream, sugar, cocoa, and vanilla with a barely-there crust, this picture-perfect cheesecake is light but still rich and decadent, with just enough sweetness and a slight tang from the cream cheese to cut through the richness. It took over four years of tinkering with the right amount of cocoa before achieving chocolate cheesecake perfection!

Hiding in plain sight in a small brick building on a quiet street in the Bronx’s Kingsbridge neighborhood since 1962, S&S Cheesecake does one thing, and does it very, very well: New York-style cheesecake. The beloved neighborhood bakery was founded by Holocaust survivor Fred Schuster, who learned to bake in Switzerland before emigrating to New York and perfecting his cheesecake recipe, which remains unchanged (and top-secret). Now over 95 years old, Schuster has entrusted his recipe to his son-in-law and 30-year S&S vet, Yair Ben-Zaken. This cheesecake is not only loved by in-the-know locals, but by diners at some of New York’s top steakhouses, including Peter Luger, where it’s served.

Instructions / Storage

  • Cheesecakes ship frozen with dry ice
  • Dry ice may dissipate in transit, cheesecakes may thaw
  • Do Not touch dry ice with bare hands
  • Cheesecake may be refrigerated for up to 14 days or frozen for up to 6 months

To Serve

  • Cake should be eaten cold
  • If you plan to serve the whole cake: Remove cheesecake from the freezer and thaw it overnight in the refrigerator.
  • If you plan to serve only a piece of the cake: Partially thaw the cake and cut desired portion size with a sharp knife that has been briefly soaked in hot water.
