The All-Madden Turducken

The original turducken, the one John Madden fell in love with on live TV. A turkey is stuffed with a duck, then a chicken, all meticulously deboned over two days and layered with two layers of sausage stuffing and one of cornbread dressing. Glenn Mistich of Gourmet Butcher Block in New Orleans presented it to Madden before a 1996 Rams-Saints game, and it became the official food of the All-Madden Team. Perfect for a Thanksgiving centerpiece with a story, a big Christmas dinner, or the football fan who wants the real thing. Three birds, one legend.

New Orleans, LA
While NOLA natives have long known about the wonder that is the Turducken, this food masterpiece didn't enter the world for most Americans until they heard NFL legend John Madden pouring out his heart on national TV. Created by owner Glenn Mistich and famously presented to broadcaster John Madden before the Rams-Saints game on Dec. 1, 1996. Madden fell in love, praising it repeatedly during the broadcast and taking the leftovers home with him. That love was entirely directed at the Gourmet Butcher Block, who since 1994 have been keeping Madden's table (and his belly) filled with the bird, inside a bird, inside a bird that makes any holiday celebration complete. While the Turducken garners most of the attention, those in the know also count on Gourmet Butcher Block's other cajun specialties like their gumbo, shrimp stuffed chicken and bread pudding.
