New Year's Day Meal Kit for 6-8

A traditional Southern New Year’s Day meal is meant to provide luck and good fortune for the next year. Melissa has always served a free “Black-Eyed Pea” toast at her Memphis BBQ Company restaurants on New Year’s Day. This year, order an entire meal from her to hopefully bring good fortune to your family! Optional detailed descriptions: Black-eyed Peas cooked with Ham Hock- Black-eyed peas in the South Represents coins or money. You have them on NY’s Day to bring coins to you for the next year. Before the Civil War, people thought these peas were only good for feeding livestock. After the tumult of the war, hungry Southerners discovered the deliciousness of black-eyed peas and all of its’ relatives. Ever since, black-eyed peas have graced the tables of Southerners and Northerners alike for their delicious, earthy flavor.

Pan of Melissa’s Famous Corn Bread – At Memphis BBQ Company, Melissa Cookston’s Memphis BBQ serves around 400 pounds of house-made, house-baked, Sweet and Peppery Cornbread every day. Double that for weekends or holidays. Get 8 big pieces of their famous cornbread with this order.

Cabbage – The green of the cabbage represents money. This cabbage is seasoned with Melissa’s Garlic Blend and Lucky 7 seasonings along with some bacon ends for added flavor.

Turnip Greens – Turnips greens, being really green, represent another form of money in the Southern persons NY Day meal. Remember, all of these traditions evolved from a time of mass poverty, so it’s ok to have 3 dishes representing money! Plus, all those people who recommend collard greens are just wrong. Melissa gives collared greens a 2 out of 10. Turnip Greens – 10/10. There you have it. Also, turnip greens don’t smell horrible.

2 lbs Smoked Pork Loin – Pork is the meat of choice in the South, and Melissa’s Smoked Pork Loin Roast is fantastic. Melissa Cookston’s Memphis BBQ takes Prairie Fresh USA Prime® Pork Loins, rub them down with Melissa’s Bold Rub and Garlic Blend Rub, then smoke them until they hit 145 degrees internal temperature. For reheating, you can roast in the oven, microwave (seriously, please don’t,) cut into thin slices and sear in a pan or grill. Thaw in the fridge for 1-2 days before cooking, or force thaw under cool, running water. Ready to eat from the fridge. As an aside, Melissa Cookston’s Memphis BBQ enjoys sandwiches made with very thin slices of the pork loin, your favorite condiments, arugula, and a nice slice of aged cheddar.

Instructions / Storage

  • BBQ is shipped with dry ice
  • Dry ice may dissipate in transit
  • Do not remove dry ice with bare hands
  • Refrigerate or freeze upon arrival
  • May be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, or in the freezer for up to 4-6 months.
  • Thaw pork loin under refrigeration first

To Serve Ribs

Turnip Greens, Black-Eyed Peas, and Cabbage

  • Heat Turnip Greens, Black-Eyed Peas, and Cabbage in a pan on the stovetop until hot, or submerge in boiling water for 30 minutes.

Smoked Pork Loin – Oven

  • Preheat oven to 350 F.
  • Remove pork loin from packaging, place in a oven-safe pan, cover with aluminum foil and roast for 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until hot.

Smoked Pork Loin – Grill or Stove Top

  • Pork loin may also be reheated on a grill, or cut into slices and seared in a skillet.


  • Place cornbread in a covered pan, and heat in oven until warm. Individual pieces may be microwaved for 45 seconds or until hot.
