Matt's El Rancho

The Original Austin-Style Tex Mex

Matt Martinez started his career in 1923 at the age of six selling tamales from a wooden pushcart by the Texas Capitol. In 1952 Matt and his wife, Jane, opened El Rancho in downtown Austin with no employees and seating for 40. Matt worked the front of the house and Jane made everything from scratch in the kitchen.

Since it’s opening, Matt’s El Rancho has gained status as “The King of Mexican Food.” The food and service brought the customers, and the customers brought fame and celebrity to restaurant that treats food like art and patrons like family. The restaurant is still family owned and now seats more than 500. El Rancho still makes everything from scratch, including the freshest corn tortillas you can find.

We're not the only ones who love them!

Not only has Matt's El Rancho has been featured in Austin Eater, but it has been a favorite of Texas politicians since its opening and President Lyndon Johnson often sent a jet from Washington D.C. to pick up his El Rancho favorites!
