Masa Madre was founded in 2019 by Tamar Fasja Unikel and Elena Vazquez Felgueres, two passionate bakers and longtime friends from Mexico City. It’s an artisanal bakery that’s become a viral hit in Chicago thanks to its unique blend of their Mexican and Jewish heritage. Masa Madre got its start in their home kitchens, with orders being taken through social media. It took off, and is beloved for its classic Jewish baked goods given a decidedly international spin.

This package serves 12-16 people and includes your choice of 2 Loaves of Challah

  • Each challah serves 6-8 people, measures approx. 15″ × 5″, and weighs 1.7 lbs.

Challah Options Include

  • Black Sesame Seed – Yeasted braided bread typically used for Shabbat, but delicious for any meal. Spongy, lightly crusted with a gentle sweet aftertaste. Covered in black sesame seeds for a classic crunchy taste.
  • Maldon Sea Salt – Yeasted braided bread typically used for Shabbat, but delicious for any meal. Spongy, lightly crusted with a gentle sweet aftertaste. Sprinkled with crunchy sea salt for a fun crust.
  • Classic – Yeasted braided bread typically used for Shabbat, but delicious for any meal. Spongy, lightly crusted with a gentle sweet aftertaste. Perfect for sandwiches, butter & jam, avocado toast, or french toast.
  • Za’atar – Yeasted braided bread typically used for Shabbat, but delicious for any meal. Spongy, lightly crusted with a gentle sweet aftertaste. Covered with za’atar, a mix of 7 spices, toasted and ground in Mexico by traditional makers. A little salty, a little tangy, totally delicious.

All ingredients are Kosher certified and are kosher-style, but kitchen is not certified.

Instructions / Storage

  • Challah arrives ready to enjoy!
  • Upon arrival, store challah at room temperature, in the refrigerator, or in the freezer.
  • Challah lasts up to 4 days at room temperature, up to 1 week in the refrigerator, or up to 1 month in the freezer.
  • Challah may be reheated if desired.

To Serve

From Frozen

  • Preheat oven to 350°F
  • Bake challah for 7-10 minutes
  • Serve and enjoy!

From Thawed

  • Preheat oven to 350°F
  • Bake challah for 5 minutes
  • Serve and enjoy!

Shipping Details

  • Masa Madre ships Wednesday and Thursday of each week
  • Orders cannot be shipped to P.O. Boxes
  • Orders shipped to Alaska and Hawaii via 2-day will incur an additional $20 charge or $35 for Overnight Shipping. Sorry guys!
